SAGINAW – Ashley Bodhaine and Elizabeth Pearce each received a $250 college scholarship from Maier & Asscociates during a Girl Scout Night Out at Saginaw Valley State University Women’s Basketball game.
The scholarships were presented during halftime of the February 21st game.
Ashley, who lives in Bay City, is a member of Troop 50231 and is in 8th grade. Elizabeth, who lives in Rhodes, is a member of Troop 50228 and is in 5th grade. They have been Girl Scouts for nine years and five years respectively.
Michelle Holmes, Program Specialist in Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan’s Saginaw Regional Center, said a total of 10 girls in 6th through 8th grade applied for the scholarship and a total of 16 girls in grades 4 and 5 applied for the scholarship. Holmes said this is the second year that GSHOM has collaborated with SVSU for the event.
“We look forward to making this an annual celebration,” Holmes said.
A total of 35 girls and 20 adults attended the game. Girl Scouts who showed up in their Girl Scout apparel received free admission and the first 100 Girl Scouts received a patch.
In addition to recognizing Ashley and Elizabeth, 14 adults from the Get Inspired Great Women of the Great Lakes Bay Region were also recognized during halftime festivities. Girl Scouts also formed a line on both sides of the tunnel to cheer on members of the basketball team as they entered the arena and sold eight cases of cookies.
