Girl Scout Cookies Now $4 per Box
Posted by Shayne Wheeler on 08/19/2013
An increase in cookie prices this year marks one of the few times that Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan has not been ahead of other councils.
Our board members and leadership team wanted to wait as long as possible before increasing the cost of a box of cookies by 50 cents as the majority of councils throughout the United States and in Michigan have already done.
The reality is that since 2005, the average rate of inflation has been 2.7 percent which would make the cost of a package of cookies $4.22. For the sake of comparison, eight years ago the cost of a package of Oreos was $2; milk was $2.17; and a gallon of gas was $3.32. Fast forward to 2013 and these prices have risen to $4.59 for Oreos; $3.98 for a gallon of milk; and $4.19 for that same gallon of gas.
Even though our cookie provider has increased the cost of cookies by two to three cents each year since 2005, Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan has absorbed this increase instead of passing it along to our customers. In addition, we have incorporated more expensive girl rewards such as iPods, guitars and digital cameras, as well as Cookie Cash and 500 and 1,000 club events.
Raising the cost by 50 cents means that troops will earn more money because troop proceeds have increased by 10 cents to 60 cents per package. This equates to more opportunities for our girls.
All proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program remain within our council to support our girls. Troop proceeds belong to the troop and may be used for troop activities or products to benefit all members of the troop with educational opportunities for girls and adult volunteers, and the support, maintenance, and enhancement of our camps and other facilities.
Proceeds earned by GSHOM stay with GSHOM.
We’re launching a new campaign this year to encourage customers to purchase five boxes of cookies to help girls learn the Five Skills associated with our product programs: money management; people skills; goal setting; budgeting; and business ethics. As an added incentive, customers who purchase five boxes of cookies will be entered into a drawing to win five cases of cookies of their choice.
