Erin Mattimoe, program specialist with Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan, said she developed an appreciation for camp because of her parents who were always encouraging her to go outside and play. A Girl Scout Brownie for two years, Erin said she became involved in camp programming with GSHOM because it’s “fun.” She said her favorite traditional camp experiences are tent camping, hiking and looking for constellations in the night sky. “It’s a slower pace at camp, almost like time slows down,” Erin said. “This gives people an opportunity to really observe the natural world around them and become aware of things they may otherwise have sped over and missed.” Erin said the needs of each group of girls are constantly evaluated to create the most positive experience. She said she wants the girls to try something new, to stretch themselves, so they can discover that yes, indeed, they can do that.
