Adult Learning
The Value of Volunteer Education
Girl Scout Volunteers are special people
In Girl Scouting, it's not just what girls do, but how adult volunteers engage them in a girl-adult partnership that prepares girls to have courage, be confident and make a positive impact on the world. Through the use of Girl Scout resources, volunteers create teachable moments that turn fun activities into educational experiences.
Volunteers grow strong and wise
All volunteers receive basic education for the position they fill. This ensures they have the knowledge and skills needed to become a successful girl developer. The knowledge volunteers acquire in basic volunteer education- Leadership Essentials- provides them with a strong foundation in current, state-of-the-art youth development practices. Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan (GSHOM) adult learning options give volunteers the ability to identify the most effective strategies to help girls and hone their leadership skills.
All experiences in Girl Scouting incorporate the discover, connect, and take action keys to leadership. Girl Scout experiences are also, as much as possible, girl-led, and encourage learning by doing (experiential learning) and cooperative learning. We call this the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE).
Leader and Co-Leader Education Requirements
As new leaders or co-leaders, volunteers complete Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) Online Volunteer Orientation and Council Essentials before the first troop meeting. Leadership Essentials should be completed within 90 days of leader appointment. These courses give volunteers the tools and resources needed to lead a dynamic Girl Scout troop. Volunteers also have the opportunity to attend enrichment courses to enhance their volunteer experience.
GSUSA Online Volunteer Orientation includes information about the basics of Girl Scouts- the history and mission of the movement; the Girl Scout Promise and Law; program keys and processes; GSUSA resources and support.
