In Memory of Helen Milliken, Ann Arbor

In 1973, Helen Milliken, former Michigan First Lady, was approached by the leadership of Michigan’s Girl Scouts about having girls participate in the Mackinac Island Governor’s Honor Guard. Mrs. Milliken was a Girl Scout, a Girl Scout leader and community leader who often spoke publicly about the comprehensive training girls receive and their ability to get things done. The first group of Girl Scout Honor Guard Scouts traveled to Mackinac Island in 1974. Every year since then girls have participated in this prestigious program.
